Street Outreach Program

Street Outreach Program (SOP) is funded by the Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Human Services.  The program provides both street-based and drop in services to youth ages 16-20 to assist this population in making a transition from life on the streets to a life of independence and self sufficiency.

Street Outreach

The purpose is to conduct outreach services designed to build relationships with street youth and gain their trust, based on a harm reduction model.  Staff can provide youth with hygiene/ first aid /safer sex kits, information and resources.  Through street-base services, providing educational, supportive services and basic needs, youth will come to trust the staff and utilize FYI services.  These include access to emergency shelter, drop-in center services, counseling and food.

Youth Outreach Center:  The Refuge

The Refuge provides a safe setting in which youth can congregate and utilize a spectrum of services.   Youth can do homework, enjoy recreational activities,  get something to eat, get help with job seeking skills  or get clothing if in need.  Free counseling with a Masters level therapist is also available.   The Refuge is open 3 days a week; Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 4-9pm and select Saturdays.

Prevention Services

Outpatient counseling is available for ages 10-21.

Youth for Youth Involvement (YFYI)

YFYI is a youth advisory board made up of previous clients from the Emergency Shelter, youth that visit The Refuge and other community youth invested in making a positive change.  YFYI members provide valuable input and ideas for improved FYI programming from a youth prospective.  They can also act as peer mentors for current clients.

Staffing

The SOP staff is made up of the FYI Program Director, Street Outreach Coordinator, part-time Outreach Specialists and community volunteers.  Staff split their time between working in the community and working at The Refuge.
